What is Permaculture?
Permaculture is a
design philosophy that works
with nature rather than against it. It’s about creating
resilient, self-sustaining landscapes that conserve resources, regenerate ecosystems, and provide for human needs—whether that’s food, shade, or fire protection.
For decades, the built environment has been designed around the idea that water is a problem—something to be moved off the land as quickly as possible through storm drains. But this approach has created two major crises:
1️⃣
Depleting Our Aquifers – Water that should naturally
soak into the ground to replenish aquifers is instead diverted away, causing
widespread water shortages.
2️⃣
Polluting Our Waterways – Storm drains carry
polluted runoff—and in many U.S. cities, even raw sewage—directly into our
rivers, lakes, and oceans, harming ecosystems and water quality.
Permaculture sees water as a resource, not a problem. Instead of draining it away, we can capture, store, and use it wisely to:
✔️
Recharge groundwater instead of depleting it.
✔️
Create resilient landscapes that stay lush even in droughts.
✔️
Grow food abundantly with rainwater catchment and efficient irrigation.
✔️
Design fire-resistant landscapes that hold moisture and reduce risk.
Many of my clients are interested in growing fruit trees, vegetables, and even raising chickens. With permaculture principles, we can design productive, regenerative landscapes that work with nature rather than against it.
If you're interested in a landscape that is beautiful, abundant, water-wise, and fire-resilient, let's explore how these principles can work for your home.
